Arizona FAQs

Price and Payment

1. How much does the Defensive Driving Course cost?

The total cost to attend an Arizona defensive driving program consists of four fees:

  • Traffic School Fee
  • State Fee
  • State Surcharge Fee
  • Court Diversion Fee
To see the total cost to attend the course, click here.

NOTE: All licensed schools in Arizona are required to collect the same fees for the State and Court. Be sure to compare only compare a Traffic School Fees if you are shopping for a price. Also, beware of undisclosed fees hidden by some schools such as processing fees, excessive certificate delivery fees, audio upgrades, etc.

What are State fees? What are Court fees?

As an approved defensive driving school, we are obligated to collect fees on behalf of the State and Court and to deliver those fees to them according to strict guidelines.

State Fee An administrative fee that gives you the privilege of taking a defensive driving course.

Court Fee Another administrative fee charged to you that allows you to avoid paying the fine. We pay your court fee directly to the Court Clerk on your behalf.

Do I have to pay the fine for the violation too?

Your fine for the violation was waived when you chose the option of completing a defensive driving course. The State and Court fees are separate, mandatory, and are not fines.

2. Is there an exam fee?

Our defensive driving school does not require a final exam. Once you are done you will take a three question review quiz. There are no additional fees or charges.

3. What is your refund policy?

The state of Arizona regulates refund rules for the defensive driving course.

A full refund may be issued prior to you starting the course.

Once you start the course, if you fail to complete for any reason, we cannot issue you a refund of the State Fee and State Surcharge Fee.

About the Course

1. What is the course like?

Each chapter has a short optional video to watch (or you can skip and just go to the written material) and some material to read. At the end of the chapters, you will answer 2 or 3 multiple-choice questions based on material in this chapter. A completion certificate can be printed from your account when you successfully finish the course. We also notify the court electronically that you finished.

2. Do I have to finish in one sitting?

No. There is no limit to the number of times you can log in.

The system will remember where you left off and you can start from there. The only requirement is that you complete 240 minutes of instruction as required by the State.

3. How long does the online defensive driving course take?

240 Minutes. It's Arizona state law, and every school has to ensure that you comply with a minimum time requirement.

Each chapter has a minimum time requirement of 24 minutes.

4. When am I required to finish the course?

You must finish the course 7 days prior to your court appearance date.

On that day, you have until midnight Pacific Standard Time to finish the course.

After midnight, the system will not allow you to continue the course. If that happens, you will need to call the court to request an extension and call us to update your information. Please call our customer support at 800-660-8908 and let us know what the new date is. Then you can continue the course.

Registration and Eligibility

1. Is this the same as Traffic Survival School?

No. Defensive Driving School is not the same as Traffic Survival School.

We do not offer the Traffic Survival program. We only offer Defensive Driving School (a.k.a. Traffic School).

Click here for a list of Traffic Survival Schools.

2. Why should I pick Improv Traffic School?
  • Voted "Best Traffic School."
  • We are the only humorous defensive driving program approved in Arizona.
  • Dismiss the violation! No points on your license.
  • No increase in insurance rates.
  • You will learn valuable traffic information, driving techniques and laws - and have fun doing it!
3. How do I register to take the defensive driving course?

Register in just a few easy steps

  1. Find your court.
  2. Fill out a simple registration form and select how quickly you need to start the course.
  3. Send us a copy of the citation, your driver license and the signed registration agreement to verify your eligibility.
  4. Once eligibility is verified, you are ready to start!
4. Am I eligible to attend a defensive driving school?

Yes, if...

You have not completed a defensive driving course to dismiss a violation in the prior 24 months of the date of this citation.

You were not involved in a crash that resulted in death or serious physical injury.

You were not cited while driving with a commercial license.

If your violation is on this list of eligible violations, you can take traffic school to dismiss it.

5. Why do I need my eligibility verified - and how is it done?

Every licensed traffic school in Arizona is required to confirm your eligibility prior to allowing you to begin the course.

All you need to do is complete the online registration and send us your driver license and court documents via email, fax or send images with your smart phone. We do the rest.

It takes about 48 hours to verify your eligibility. However, you must complete the course 7 days prior to the day set by the court. If you are approaching that deadline, we offer an option of same day eligibility processing. For this option, select priority processing when prompted during the registration.

Watch for an email from us with the subject "Improv Traffic School Eligibility Verified."

Once eligibility is cleared, you can start the course.

6. How can I tell which court I should choose?

The court information can be found on your ticket/citation.

Each court in Arizona has a unique ID number. This is the most reliable way to identify your court since some court names look alike.

Don't be confused by the strange names and locations. For example:

  • Sometimes the court name on the citation is not the name the Arizona State Supreme Court uses.
  • Cochise County Justice Court Precinct 5 is also called Sierra Vista JP (ID number 0205).
  • The words 'Magistrate Court' and 'City Court' mean 'Municipal Court'.
  • Maricopa Municipal Court is in Pinal County ... not Maricopa County.

7. What do you need to verify eligibility and how do I get paperwork to you?

Arizona requires that we have 3 items:

  1. A copy of your citation.
  2. A legible copy of your driver license.
  3. A signed registration agreement.

Chose one of three ways to send the clear, legible documents to us:

  1. Email or Text
    • Scan documents and send as an attachment
    • Take a good picture with your phone. Make sure all edges of the paper are visible in the photo. Text to us per the instructions found on the Eligibility form.
  2. Fax
    • Fax the front of the citation.
    • Lighten and enlarge your driver license before faxing
    • Make sure the officer's writing is legible. It's okay to use a pencil to darken in the writing.
  3. Mail
    • You may mail the documents to us.
    • Make sure you have enough time for the mail to arrive and be processed
8. When do I have to finish the course?

The State of Arizona requires that you finish the course 7 calendar days prior to your court appearance date.

Call the Court if you need an extension (also called a continuance).

What if I'm close to or past my court date? How can I get a continuance?

You must get specific instructions from the Court about your options and to request more time to finish the course. You will find the Court's phone number on the citation.

9. My due date is approaching. What should I do?

Your certificate will be available immediately after completion of the course.

However, the State of Arizona requires you to complete the course 7 days prior to the court appearance date shown on the citation. This processing time is needed to dismiss your case. If you do not have enough time to get the course completed within this time period, call the Court to ask for a continuance and to get instructions from them. The Court's number is on the citation.

Select Priority Processing options during registration if you are running short of time. Once we verify your eligibility it is up to you to complete the course in a timely manner.

Tests and Quizzes

1. How does it work?

At the end of each chapter you will be asked 2-3 review questions, total 25 throughout the course.

The answers are in the chapter you just read.

You can miss up to 5 review questions during the duration of the entire course and still pass.

There are NO final tests required by our course.

2. Is it possible to fail?

You will need to answer 20 out of 25 chapter review questions correctly to pass the course.

Easy questions make it simple to pass the course. As long as you read chapter material YOU WILL PASS.

Score at least 80% (20 out of 25 multiple-choice chapter quiz questions) to pass.

You will not be able to re-take chapter quizzes so read carefully and go back to review if you are not certain.

We refer you to a classroom if you score less than 80%.

3. When does the court get my money?

We mail checks to the court once a week. They usually arrive at the court house in 7 days or less after completion.

Completion

1. How does the court know I finished the course?

We notify the court electronically that you passed the course.

2. When do I get my completion receipt?

You can print a copy of your Certificate of Completion for your records immediately after you complete the course.

3. Will the court tell me when my citation is dismissed?

To check on the status of your citation, please call the court at the phone number on your citation.

The course itself is exactly the same. The only difference is who is responsible for collecting required court/state fees.
